The
Team
Huw Sherlock
Huw
has been carrying out archaeological excavations, surveys
and research since 1987, but in many ways his professional
life has been a fulfillment of a childhood dream.

As a boy
he spent many days digging large holes in the garden,
driving his parents to distraction! Huw first worked as
an archaeologist for the City of Hereford Archaeology
Unit in 1987 and he learnt the basic skills of excavation,
site survey, finds processing and building surveying on
a series of sites in Hereford. After working on sites
in Italy (excavations at Eraclea, near Venice) and Turkey
(Sagalassos near
Burdur) and spending a year studying early Christian and
medieval archaeology at the University
of Bologna, Huw returned to the UK to follow a post-graduate
course of study in archaeology at Birmingham
University. During this time he worked on the excavation
of the major burial ground by the west front of Hereford
Cathedral during which 1100 bodies were excavated.
During the 1990's Huw widened his experience of archaeology
in the U.K, working as an archaeological field surveyor
for Bournemouth
University as part of the team carrying out the English
Heritage sponsored Monuments
At Risk survey. This was the largest ever survey of
archaeological sites of all types in Britain, and provided
much needed baseline data about the survival of archaeological
sites in the landscape and the potential threats they
face. During the course of the Project Huw visited thousands
of sites across eight English counties from Gloucestershire
to Derbyshire.
Other jobs in different roles followed on from this experience,
notably working as the Archaeological development control
and Sites and Monuments Record Officer for Reading, Woking
and Newbury in Berkshire, but after the birth of his son
Huw wished to work closer to home, which has always been
in Herefordshire. Thus the decision to start working as
a self-employed archaeological contractor was taken, and
Archenfield Archaeology was born in 1998. From humble
beginnings the practice has grown and Archenfield as a
collective enterprise goes from strength to strength.
"The idea was always to try and carry out the most effective
archaeological interventions possible given the constraints
of the developer-funded system that has been in operation
in the U.K. since 1991" Huw says.
"Archenfield Archaeology is based on the ethos that the
archaeologist stands as the last best hope for the fragile
resource that is our common heritage; if we can't effectively
record and interpret the traces left by our predecessors
we are all the poorer for it". Archenfield Archaeology
have been privileged to carry out some of the largest
excavations of urban medieval sites in and around Hereford
for many years, and we are committed to ensuring that
the information that has been gleaned from this work will
be shared with the widest possible audience.
Huw is an enthusiastic participant in 'friendly' cricket
and loves walking, reading and finding obscure country
pubs.
