St Andrew's Church, Hampton Bishop |
St Andrew’s Church, Hampton Bishop One of the Herefordshire’s more intact medieval churches, St Andrew’s has a nave dating from the early 12th century. Later that century the nave was extended westwards and the tower was added. |

In Domesday Book (1086) Hampton Bishop’s population included six villeins (ordinary villagers), five bordars (sometimes translated as smallholders) and two female slaves. As there is no mention of either church or priest, it seems likely that the 12th century church was the first one built here. |

In the early 20th century Edward Elgar lived at Plas Gwynne on the eastern suburbs of Hereford only a short distance away. He is said to have visited St Andrew's to play the fine Nicholson and Lord organ. |
