Putson

Hereford

Putson, a suburb of Hereford, is an area of late 20th century housing. However it is an old settlement, one of the ancient townships which surrounded the city.

The old towing path beside the Wye leads towards Putson from Hereford. The bank here was once the boundary of the Royal Forest of Haywood.

'dicunt super sacramentum suum, quod metae et bundae ejusdem forestae nunc usitatae incipiunt ad pontem de Waye infra villam Herefordiae, et sic descendendo per filum aquae de Waye usque ad villam Potestone,'

that is of course Putson, which was not in the Forest

'quae nunc est in foresta. '

The hamlet of Putson on the bank of the Wye in 1835. Watery Lane, running south-west from Putson, no longer exists. The name Watery Lane now applies to the lane leading south-east from Lower Bullingham.
