Lower Galdeford, Ludlow
Shropshire

Originally the site of an Augustinian Friary, this had been the site of Ludlow's livestock market, constructed by Timothy Curley in the 1860s.Curley had been an engineer with the Hereford and Newport Railway. After the completion of the line he worked for Hereford City Council and constructed the town's sewers and livestock market.

Curley was an enthusiastic archaeologist and took the opportuity to excavate the remains of the friary before the construction of the market. Our project re-excavated some of his trenches to show the medieval walls, as shown here.

These came from the backfilling of the 19th century archaeological trenches. One would like to think that the beer bottles were left after Victorian archaeologists enjoyed a well-deserved drink.
