In April 2003 Archenfield Archaeology
conducted archaeological monitoring on a site to the rear of
number 16 South Street. South Street, formerly ‘In Vico
versus Hereford’ is believed to have been burgaged by the
Prior of Leominster as part of the creation of the town in
the 12th century.
The disturbance to the site was limited
to the new foundations and few features were observed. The
most significant of these was an unmortared stone wall of
unknown date which appeared to be a property boundary
running at 90° to the street. This tends to support the
evidence from cartographic and documentary evidence that the
site was occupied in the medieval period.
