Jane Smith

Artist, Chairmaker and Poet

I live and work in Brockhampton, near Ross-on-Wye, making one-off sculptural chairs from native hardwood. Using only hand tools such as bowsaws, drawknives, adzes and spokeshaves, the designs of each chair comes entirely from the wood, evolving as I follow the natural curves and character of the tree.

The Crack Chair - elm and ash

One chair started with a crack, an old wound in a plank of Scottish elm, rejected by the veneer industry.  It appears to resemble a river valley, animal track or vein of a leaf and, when placed in front of a window, lets a slice of light through.  The back flexes when it is leant against and is detachable, revealing a handle for picking up the chair, or converting it into a stool. Four legs are cleft from one curved log of Herefordshire ash and held in place by oak wedges made from 100 year old lathes from a Brockhampton barn roof.

The Moose Chair - in cleft sweet chestnut

The Moose chair began with the cleaving of a large curved sweet chestnut log which became a long seated longer chair, reflecting the ease with which this wood can be worked when green.  Like the long nosed moose, this seat for the garden or home, sniffs the air and relaxes.

I am a member of Trackways to Remember who are inspired to create by the land and the ancient tracks which link our studios in South Herefordshire.  Like the grain of wood they meander across my landscape, connecting people and places, thoughts and ideas.  To create a chair from a tree, all I have to do is to find the right track and follow it.  The wood is my guide and instinct my decision maker.
