The name Croft simply means an enclosure.

In Domesday the manor of Crofta was held by William of Ecouis. Bernard held it from William. There was one hide which paid tax and one plough in lordship.

There were 2 ploughmen, a Frenchman and three bordars with two ploughs. The value had been 20 shillings and at the time of Domesday, 25 shillings.

Before the Norman Conquest Croft had been held by a man named Edwin
