The mint moved
to this site in Icknield Street in 1862 and minted coins for
many countries including Egypt, Mexico, Brazil and Tsarist
Russia. |

The original company was formed in 1794 by Ralph Heaton I.
The premises were in Slaney Street, Birmingham. |

In 1850 Ralph Heaton II
purchased equipment from the
Soho Works. This had been the
original Birmingham Mint, created by
Mathew Boulton in 1786
and was the first to use powered presses rather than
hand-operated ones. |

In 1889 the company changed its
name from Heaton and Sons to 'The Mint, Birmingham' |

|
|
|
 |
It ceased
production in 2003. |
