Birmingham Mint

Photographs of Birmingham Mint by Will Lewis

The mint moved to this site in Icknield Street in 1862 and minted coins for many countries including Egypt, Mexico, Brazil and Tsarist Russia.

The original company was formed in 1794 by Ralph Heaton I. The premises were in Slaney Street, Birmingham.

In 1850 Ralph Heaton II purchased equipment from the Soho Works. This had been the original Birmingham Mint, created by Mathew Boulton in 1786 and was the first to use powered presses rather than hand-operated ones.

In 1889 the company changed its name from Heaton and Sons to 'The Mint, Birmingham'

It ceased production in 2003.

Some of the last products of the Birmingham Mint - Euro blanks, a BT  Swimming Championships medal and a Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind (Sight Savers) silver medal.
